Detailed Description of the Records

Subcollection:
Subject Matter

Extent: 994 files, approximately 40 linear feet
The Subject Matter subcollection
documents the range of JDC’s global programmatic operations in the immediate aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. These initiatives include, most notably, its vast relief
and reconstruction efforts
to re-establish the communal infrastructure of Jewish life in Europe;
its response to the myriad legal complications regarding missing persons and heirless property
which developed in the wake of the Holocaust;
and its organization and implementation of a vast array of resources, including medical care,
community health resources, loans and scholarships,
emigration assistance, and educational resources–including early childhood services
in Iran, Europe and North Africa, and support for yeshivot in Palestine and, after 1948, the State of Israel–for Jewish communities around the
world.

A significant portion of these records testify to JDC’s extensive involvement in
sustaining
the remnants of European Jewish communities and survivors in the wake of the Holocaust.
Numerous files reflect JDC’s extensive involvement in sustaining survivors:
these efforts included assisting with the care, transit, and resettlement of refugees;
creating a Tracing Service departmental unit dedicated
to addressing requests from relatives and friends seeking information about loved
ones who may have survived the Holocaust; and providing resources for survivors
to pursue legal remedies for the recovery of Jewish cultural property, restitution
for heirless property, and claims for reparations payments.
Another unit of files, the Documentation record group, focuses on the protocols of
having missing people
legally declared dead so that their spouses could remarry and their heirs could retain
access to their properties. The largest record group in this subcollection, at nearly 400 files, is the Case Files
record group,
which contains records on individuals who received aid from or otherwise corresponded
with JDC staff.
The range of materials also reflect JDC’s close coordination with other non-governmental agencies,
such as the International Refugee Organization (IRO), in providing funds and resettlement
assistance and
determining eligibility criteria for individuals who wished to emigrate.
Arrangement
The subcollection is organized into 18 record groups, each of which focuses on a large-scale policy or program implemented by JDC in the various regions and countries where it operated:
