JDC Announces New Chesin (Steuer) Fellowship

Oct 17, 2017

JDC is delighted to announce the establishment of the Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship. This second endowed fellowship was made possible by a generous gift from Lorraine and Sorrell Chesin of Albany, supporters of JDC who in 2016 endowed the Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship.

Dr. Sorrell Chesin dedicated his career to the advancement of higher education. He held several senior administrative positions during his tenure at SUNY Albany from 1965 to 2013, including service as Executive Director of the University at Albany Foundation. His professional activities made him well aware of the importance of research and motivated his decision to endow the Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin fellowship. He and his wife Lorraine attended the public lecture delivered by the first Lorraine and Sorrell Chesin Fellow Dr. Michal Frankl in January 2017. Sorrell found himself quite inspired by the presentation and the audience’s responses which led him to fund a second Fellowship to honor his parents:

“Since endowments are designed to be permanent, this fellowship accomplishes something important: research in Jewish history for generations to come. My parents came to America from Europe as children. They raised three sons, each of whom was able to follow a career path and achieve the American dream. Future generations will be able to look back and feel pride in what their great-grandparents have done. Our family is pleased to know that our name was and will always be affiliated with JDC and its vital role within the worldwide Jewish community.”
