James Osorio Lectures on Jewish Refugees and Their Philippine Lifeworlds, 1938–1945
This lecture, delivered on March 30, 2026, examines the experiences of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution and settled in the Philippines between 1938 and 1941. Using their first-person accounts, James Osorio reveals how they navigated exile amid the archipelago’s colonial and wartime upheavals and how these conditions shaped their identities, communities, and sense of belonging.
This program is part of the JDC Archives webinar series Across Oceans, Across Cultures: Jewish Refuge in East Asia and the Role of JDC.
James Carl Osorio is a PhD student in History at Brown University and the recipient of the 2025 Fred and Ellen Lewis/JDC Archives Fellowship.
