Yurii Kaparulin Lectures on Jewish Agrarian Settlements in Southern Ukraine (1924-1948)
Yurii Kaparulin, recipient of the 2023 Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin/JDC Archives Fellowship, gave his public lecture on Jewish Agrarian Settlements in Southern Ukraine (1924-1948).
The lecture focuses on the social history of the Jewish agrarian settlements of the Kherson Oblast in Southern Ukraine from 1924 to 1948. Utilizing a micro-historical approach, it investigates how Soviet policies transformed Jewish life in the Kherson Oblastand, the impact of Holodomor—the Great Famine of 1932-1933—on the local Jewish populations, and the distinct characteristics of the Holocaust in South Ukraine. Dr. Kaparulin also discusses Jewish and Gentile responses to the anti-Jewish violence during World War II and the immediate postwar years, and the memory of the Jewish past in the region today.
