Trone reported to Rosenberg 5/28/40, 10/2/40, and also outlined state of affairs to Dr. Otto Hirsch of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, 6/7/40. Steamship Nea Hellis sailed from Lisbon carrying 13 settlers for the Dominican Republic, 8/27/40, 9/4/40. Rosen informed Trone that the U.S. State Department considered it inadvisable to send settlers to the Dominican Republic direct from Germany or the occupied territories, 9/30/40. JDC unwilling to shoulder financial responsibility for former European employees who were scheduled to arrive in the Dominican Republic as non-settler candidates, Rosenberg – Leavitt 10/2/40, Rosenberg- Morrissey 10/24/40, Leavitt – Rosenberg, 11/14/40. State Dept. declared it inadvisable to bring refugees directly from Germany to Cooperativa SOSUA owing to newspaper stories about Nazi spies in the colony, 1/18/41. DORSA agreed to aid immigrants in becoming self-supporting, up to a span of 1½ years, on whose behalf it had requested Dominican visas, Speiser to Schweitzer 3/5/41. DORSA received permission to bring to Dominican Republic Dominican visa holders from France, Switzerland, Portugal & Casablanca, 1/7/42. The Dominican Republic ceased to issue immigration visas to refugees, 12/11/42. JDC requested to cover transportation costs of 6 (7) refugee women in London holding Dominican Republic passports and anxious to join husbands and families residing in Cooperativa SOSUA, 9/26/44. The 7 refugee women from London finally arrived in the Dominican Republic, 9/4/45. JDC agreed to meet transportation costs of refugees coming to join relatives in Cooperativa SOSUA, but only if latter unable to meet such costs in advance, 12/27/45, 12/31/45. Dominican Committee for Jewish Immigration formed by Dominican Government to stimulate investment of capital and encourage Jewish immigration, 12/20/45, 1/2/46. File 53: Immigration, Gertrude Sturmann, 1941 - 1961

Gertrude Sturmann, a Nazi refugee, arrived in the Dominican Republic in 1941 where she lived until her death in 1960. A distant relative whom she had never met defrayed the costs of her transportation to the D. R. and supported her, via DORSA, for the rest of her life.
