Subcollection: Administration

This subcollection comprises records regarding the composition, structure, operations, leadership, and personnel of JDC. These files include correspondence with staff members and lay leaders; records of administrative bodies such as the Landsmannschaften, Medical, and Refugee Committees; overseas cables; reports on program activities; meeting minutes; fundraising resources; and accounts of the distribution of funds and supplies overseas.

This subcollection is divided into two record groups, New York Administration and Overseas Administration.

This record group contains materials on JDC governance, committee and subcommittee development; interviews and eye-witness accounts of JDC representatives around the world, and fundraising commitments to raise necessary funds to provide resources for global vulnerable Jewish populations.

The Committee on Cultural Activities was organized in May 1922. It had six members, two each representing the American Jewish Relief Committee (AJRC), Central Relief Committee and People’s Relief Committee (PRC), the three constituent Committees of the JDC. Cyrus Adler was its only Chairman. Before May 1922, the Cultural Committee of the American Jewish Relief Committee was in operation, Cyrus Adler, Chairman, and its activities continued in reduced degree through the later 1920s.

In the 1921 campaign, the JDC represented three constituent committees: the American Jewish Relief Committee, Central Relief Committee and People’s Relief Committee (PRC). In that campaign, wherever a joint drive was conducted locally, the funds went to the JDC but the proceeds were credited to the three committees by the following formula: American Jewish Relief Committee 65%, Central Relief Committee 20%, People’s Relief Committee (PRC) 15%.
