Record Group: Germany

The Germany Record Group, the largest in Countries & Regions, contains 6,627 files in 199 boxes. The material covers the years 1945-1954, divided into four series: Administration, Organizations, Subject Matter and Localities. During this postwar period in occupied Germany, the JDC focused its efforts to assist the thousands of Jewish survivors who were confined in Displaced Persons Camps throughout Germany. The JDC dealt with the medical, nutritional, religious, educational, vocational, and emotional needs of the survivors. In addition, JDC officers helped the DPs with emigration, personal legal matters, restitution, and employment. The Administration series includes interoffice correspondence between the JDC offices in Germany, financial material and monthly reports. In addition, there are thousands of personnel files, legal case files and individual files. Many of these files are restricted for confidentiality concerns. Please see our Access & Restrictions Policy.

JDC served as the liaison between the DPs and the Military Governments represented in the four occupied zones (U.S., British, French and Russian), and thus these files reflect the extensive communication among these units.

The Organizations series reflects the scope of activity between the JDC and organizations on several levels, such as Government, NGOs and Jewish Organizations. The material includes correspondence, minutes of meetings and reports on cooperative efforts. The Subject Matter series includes case files, reconstruction projects, child care programs, reports on anti-Semitism, prosecution of war criminals and the establishment of a Tracing Service to search for survivors, as well as visits by VIPs. The files contained in the Localities series include information on specific cities and DP camps. The material provides a detailed account of the numerous challenges the JDC confronted in the camps, such as supplies, schools, camp committees, political factions and religious groups.
